Deer hunting: pre-dawn, driving from the cabin to the site, slamming as much coffee as possible, regretting the beer and whiskey slammed the night before.

Cars & Coffee in West Omaha. I live just off the main east/west road through town . Pulling out of my neighborhood for the 15 minute drive out to the show at 8-something on a Saturday morning, it’s never more than a minute or two before catch up to or are caught by another show attendee in a cool ride.

Get up very early, cross the 49th into WA and drive Chuckanut, down the coast into La Conner. Stop for coffee in every town, village and hamlet on the way.

PNW perfection.

My morning drive to work is quite nice on some days - filmed this last year. :)

Commute video at 46:30 (if kinja’d)

This part of my commute is always a treat (@46:30), especially in the Miata because top down life. There are other much twistier bits that are more fun to drive but the final section of just blasting along next to the ocean with the light morning traffic is always awesome.

Crack of dawn, Tail of the Dragon

It was empty other than the few that were with me. Clear skies, clear road. I made it 20% of the way back and my intercooler hose blew off again.

I left pretty early for the IMSA race at Mid-Ohio this year and avoided highways for most of the drive. It was a beautiful Sunday morning drive through rural Ohio. I’m already looking forward to doing it again next year.

Most of the time when I take a drive, since I live in a wide sprawling suburb I just pick a road and see where it ends.

There however are pretty decent drives out of town and some I have even been part of.

The traffic is a killer outside of the 6am range but driving up to Mt. Lemmon from Tucson is a great time otherwise. My C7 managed to earn a few compliments from Gen 2 NSX drivers. Just a few.

The Apache Trail/Tortilla Flat run is a little worn down for hard suspended cars but is also a great drive

And the east side of Sedona, when it’s clear out and a weekday and everyone is asleep, is home to some of the most beautiful switchbacks on the way to Flagstaff

When I visit my family in Spain I often get jetlagged, so some days I wake up extremely early. My favorite drive on those days has been from Avion to Soutelo through the Albarellos hydroelectric facility. N-541 is a freeway without speed cameras, and the rest are mountainy B roads. Soutelo has some very good places for breakfast. The regular route through OU-212 takes 40 minutes and it’s also very fun since none of OU-212 has speed cameras and it mostly has a 90km/h speed limit. very few built up areas.

“Unnamed road” is where the dam is. The series of looping turns are the service road for the pipe carrying the water from the damn to the turbine. Hopefully next time I visit I record this ride thoroughly.

I dodge school buses and soccer Mom s to drop my son off at school. Then I have the harrowing drive through DC stop and go rush hour to get to the office nice and stressed out. So much fun.

as long as it didnt rain the night before, early morning runs on the Dragon are truly special! Same deal on the BRP if you are camping someplace along the road, getting an early start when far from the interstates you dont see a soul for a long time. Something about tearing up the morning quiet with raucous exhaust noise and tire squeal is always great.

Northeast San Luis Obispo and south Monterey counties , pretty much anywhere, the earlier in the day the better . It helps to beat the heat in summer months, too. Also highway 1, if you can catch it without traffic . W hen I moved back here from the Bay area my final drive down after moving everything else was in my old GTI, and I got up in the dark, went over highway 17 to Santa Cruz, and hammered Hwy 1 . South of Ragged Point I caught a Jag XJ that was being hustled as well and we had a great run into Cambria.  Also also so many roads in the Sierras. When in the mountains I’m almost never in a good driving vehicle though, I dream of taking the 911 up for a blast.

T hat pic is gorgeous, where is that?

I am a bit torn with early morning drives - less traffic but we tend to have a bunch of police out, especially Sundays, which just makes me nervous...

Rt. 193/Georgetown Pike from Old Dominion to the Beltway (not labeled, but the wide highway to the east of Scott’s Run Nature Preserve). I commute this every morning, usually in awful DC traffic, but every once in a while I hit it with no traffic and it’s AWESOME! Some of the side roads spouting off of it are also pretty wild, too .

Ahh I think an actual story might be more appropriate, so I will put in the effort here. One of my favorite parts of driving across the country in 2017 was that I made it a point to start early almost every day. So wherever I was, I got to experience a nice early morning drive. Those drives started in the following places: just outside Shenandoah National Park VA , Robbinsville NC, Memphis TN, Ozark National Forest AR, a canyon near Amarillo TX, Manzano NM, and Phoenix AZ. While it was kind of cold most of the mornings (mid november), it was special to drive top down blasting through each of those areas with minimal traffic and nothing but the open road ahead of me headed west. Most of the days became monotonous eventually but if I could solely repeat the mornings, I’d do that every day for the rest of my life. Something always nice about adventuring before the crowds wake up and get in the way of everything. “Early bird catches the worm” is probably the most true statement I have ever heard.

The only problem with early around there is usually the fog. When its not foggy, early is certainly ideal to avoid traffic. But midday midweek away from any major holiday in the winter is usually my favorite around there. I’d love to try a “before the sunrise” drive up there though, that is definitely on my list of things to do just to really hit it early, ideally on a non foggy day.  I was hoping to do that later this month when Im up at Laguna Seca for a track day, but its looking like I wont have time for the PCH. At least the track early morning will be sweet anyways.

Any morning drive in the canyons are great. The drives that I like better though, are short road trips with a few detours for fun roads. Wake up early, make or grab a cold brew, sip that throughout the morning, listen to a few tracks on the hwy parts, turn off the distractions for the fun bits, then arrive at your destination before lunch.

I can’t believe this was a year ago, but it was seriously one of my favorite days in 2018: https://oppositelock.kinja.com/i-did-a-thing-1826841880

I love a trip just like that. The sun rising on PCH (if I’m headed north), cool wind, and fairly empty roads. I actually left later than I wanted but I headed home before the sunrise so that helped balance the trip.

We should all gather for a dawn SLO county drive. You know, once all the old cars in the group are acquired and running (hopefully the GTO sells for a good price on BAT and CaptDale gets the TVR soon haha)

Definitely up for that! Having others to share the misery of waking up early makes it more doable/more accountable if getting lazy lol.

On the coast the fog stays low for awhile, but that’s the nice thing about North county inland, it usually clears up in short order. Enjoy the trackday! Laguna fog is something else, it’s soupy! Sometimes really early sessions get called off for visibility.

This is very true. Even residents of Ohio fail to realize that it is actually a beautiful state.
